Choices, choices

Interview #1 at the health insurance company: I was pumped and ready to go for this interview. I was a bit shaky and nervous but as soon as I met my two interviewers, I was more relaxed. I was placed in an interview room with windows so all of the employees got to gawk at me. We were in there for over an hour. One of the women who interviewed me was also from the U.P. and the other related to me on many areas. They congratulated me on asking them "excellent" questions that made them think. I was told I would hear from them by next friday or the beginning of the next week. I left feeling excited and happy about how the whole thing went.

Then I get in my car and my window handle randomly decides to fall off onto the floor so my windown is now stuck cracked open with a metal bar protruding from the side of the door. Nice.

Interview #2 at the college: I was exhausted, tired, and hungry. I just wanted to go home and crash on my couch with an extra large pizza. I didn't even want to go but I knew I'd always feel guilty for not taking the opportunity. I got to the college and was told to fill out 3 huge long application forms. That made me mad because I wasn't prepared and didn't have all the numbers with me. Then I had to sit in the waiting area for 40 minutes because my interviewer was in with a student. In other words, I was pissed off. When she finally came out I was lightheaded from hunger but forced myself to smile and be pleasant anyway. It ended up being the best interview I've ever done because I wasn't nervous, I wasn't trying to think of the perfect thing to say, and I was just ME. I now have a 2nd interview next thursday with the Director of Admissions and the Director of Student Services.

So which one am I more excited about? I can't quite tell you right now. IF I am offered both jobs, I don't know which one I'd rather chose. Both have good and bad aspects to them. Since I'm a list oriented type of person, I'm going to compile a list. It's my blog so I can do whatever I want!

Heath insurance job pros: AWESOME health insurance package, great company, job is strictly claims processing so no answering phones, decent pay, my own cubicle (not a portion of a table like I have now), only 2 miles from my apartment, pays for additional school, great opportunity for advancement

Health insurance job cons: cubicle hell, I didn't get a finance degree to be doing claims processing

College job pros: it's my dream job to be a financial aid counselor at a college, I get my own OFFICE, the pay is substantially more a year than the health insurance job, get to help students finance for their careers, get to balance customer service and crunching numbers, did I mention I've always wanted to do this?

College job cons: have to work 1 saturday a month and 1 night a week, not sure on the health insurance or retirement packages, those are the only cons I can think of

Both jobs are awesome. I'd be happy for either of them. My only worry is that I'll be offered the health insurance job but I won't know whether to accept it or not due to not knowing what the college wants to do or how long that process will be. AHHHH...such choices. Either job will make me 100 times happier than I am right now with my temp job from hell.

My thoughts? You should take the college job, it sounds more in line with what you want to do with your life. If you get paid more there you'll be able to afford independent health insurance in addition to what they give you at the college. It seems like you'd be happier there.

I agree with Jaime. It sounds like you would like the actual job more at the college. As far as insurance and stuff colleges generally have adequate coverage. Another plus is that you will gain experiance as a financial aid counselor and then you could get a job at another college should you decide to move. Good luck with both!

Hey Julie! Congrats on the successful interviews! I agree with the above comments on taking the college job. If you get offered a position at the health insurance company first, I would tell them that you are excited about the offer and interested, but ask to have a few days to think about it. Hopefully the college will get back to you in that time frame! Again, I'm happy for you. :) Amy

Amy, I think I'll take your advice about asking for a couple days to make a decision with the health insurance company. That's a good idea!
